The Sri Lankan modernist architect Minnette de Silva started her architectural practice in Kandy in the 1940s. By means of an artistic research method the lecture will discuss two seemingly unrelated projects together, thereby allowing a debate on knowledge production with a focus on depicting underrepresented actors, relations and forms of knowledge within modernist architecture projects in the era of Decolonization. Le Corbusier’s plan of the “Museum of Knowledge” in Chandigarh and Minnette de Silva’s concept for a film about a dancer, both from the 1950’s, form the starting points of the discussion.

The video-installation focuses on Minnette de Silvas first house, the ’Karunaratne House’ (1947-51, Kandy). Different stories materialize on the surface of the house: a feminist Utopian history, a story of and in a book, the relationship between a camera and a wall, and the film about a danseuse De Silva had planned but never realized.img03
