Plans are afoot to remove dogs and dump them in the sea – Champa Fernando

“While all this misery on humans and dogs is being unfolded, plans are afoot to remove dogs on a large scale from Colombo and perhaps dump them in the sea!! Please, let the compassionate public be alert to any such action. So much for the daily chanting of “May all living beings be well” in this so called Buddhist country, with the most Un-Buddhistic goings on!! And, so much for the highly publicized promise made by Minister Faiszer Musthapha that NO dog will be removed without intimating the Advisory Committee he appointed on Animal Welfare! He screamed hoarse that NO DOG will be Killed! While allegedly the sedated dogs will be dumped in the sea.”

Plans are afoot to remove dogs and dump them in the sea – Champa Fernando

Hot on the heels of the Vice Chancellor of Sri Jayawardenepura University( http://www.sjp.ac.lk/ ) Prof. Sampath Amaratunge paying Rs. 350,000/- of public money to a pest control company named Ultrakleen/Ultrakil to do the disappearing act on some 30 odd sterilized rabies vaccinated dogs on April 8 and 9, a 40-foot rubbish heap of the Meethotamulla rubbish dump in the Capital City of Colombo crumbles on 200 odd homes in that area burying hundreds of human beings alive under the stinking and slimy rubbish on the Sinhala and Tamil New Year Day.

The rest of the country did not stop the festivities and the crackers they lit over several days drowned the screams of the people trapped alive under the rubbish!!

As for the University’s dogs, it is alleged that they were buried or dumped in the sea after sedating them. Ask as we may, Prof. Amaratunge comes up with one lie after another as to the fate of the dogs!!

We understand that the remaining dogs in that University too would suffer the same fate, though Prof. Amaratunge tries hard to look humane by telling the media that he will allocate a land in the University to retain the dogs and funds for the care of the dogs to a group of animal lovers of that University who had been making these dogs safe by vaccinating them and stemming their proliferation by sterilizing them with the help of several animal welfare organizations.

Yet, Prof. Amaratunge does not want to meet a single animal welfarist who has offered to provide a sustainable solution to the dog issue at his University.

In the minds of most of us, “Dog Abuse” is synonymous with China as is “Human Misery” with Ethiopia. Sri Lanka is fast closing ranks with these two countries and may soon surpass them in terms of dog abuse and human misery.

While all this misery on humans and dogs is being unfolded, plans are afoot to remove dogs on a large scale from Colombo and perhaps dump them in the sea!!

While allegedly the sedated dogs will be dumped in the sea ( watch the beaches around our resplendent island unless they are dumped in shark infested seas!!), we wonder where the Meethotamulla Residents will be dumped??

We animal lovers and welfarists/activists will fight against this new wave of horrendous dog abuse in Sri Lanka. We have already lodged a police complaint against the VC. We ask all compassionate human beings to be with us in our fight for the voiceless in this Thrice Blessed Land of ours, where ideally no animal should be harmed!!

As for human abuse, perhaps the time has come for all of us to stand up against it while the parasitic and apathetic politicians blithely live it off at the expense of the tax payer’s money, utterly unmoved!

Suddenly, I am ashamed of my Sri Lankan identity!

It is time for you to step in Mr. President / Mr. Prime Minister and rectify this downhill slide in all humane values that would soon make Sri Lanka the most uncivilized country in the world.
